On November 17, State Councilor Liu Yandong met with American Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Commerce Secretary Gary Faye Locke at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. MOST Minister WAN Gang was also present.
Liu said that bilateral S&T cooperation has witnessed steady development through joint efforts since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries and the signing of China-US S&T Cooperation Agreement. The Protocol on China-US Clean Energy Research Center, concluded during President Obama’s visit to China, is an important part of China-US S&T Cooperation Agreement. It shows the two countries’ determination to jointly cope with global challenges, and will provide strong support for bilateral S&T cooperation. Liu also said that strengthening cooperation on clean energy would foster more emerging industries, improve energy mix, and bring into play the role of S&T in tackling global financial crisis. The two sides also exchanged ideas on other issues of mutual interest, such as people-to-people exchanges, joint researches among universities, and training of innovation-oriented talents.
