Li Meng, Vice Minister of Science and Technology of China met with Leonardo Beltrán Rodríguez, Mexico’s Deputy Secretary for Energy Planning and Transition, who came to Beijing to attend the 8th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM8) and the 2nd Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-2) on June 8, 2017.
Li noted that his ministry is willing to work together with Mexico to advance bilateral cooperation in science, technology and innovation (STI), adding that the two countries have developed a sound S&T partnership and made real progress in such areas as clean energy, LED lighting, geo-space, aerospace and aviation, nanotechnology and biotechnology. China and Mexico both have abundant clean energy resources, and share common objectives and huge potential for cooperation in tapping clean energy since the two joined CEM and other multilateral mechanisms, making the bilateral cooperation in clean energy even more meaningful. He hoped his ministry and the energy department of Mexico will increase exchanges and make joint efforts to facilitate energy technology cooperation between research institutes and businesses from the two countries and to support academic exchanges and joint R&D programs between Chinese and Mexican scientists. He added that MOST will discuss the feasibility of setting up a joint research center to develop hydropower and other clean sources of energy.
Rodríguez agreed with Li’s suggestions and spoke highly of the successful conclusion of the CEM8 and the MI-2 in China. He said China has played an important role in advancing STI as well as clean energy development worldwide, and hoped the two countries can strengthen cooperation in building clean cities and hydropower plants. He added that the Mexican government is supportive of China’s proposal on building a joint research center for clean energy.
