On the sidelines of the Eighth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM8) and the Second Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-2) held in Beijing, the CEM & MI Public-Private Action Summit was held at the China National Convention Center in Beijing on June 8, 2017. Wan Gang, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, President of the China Association for Science and Technology, and Minister of Science and Technology attended and addressed the Summit and announced the official launch of the EV30@30 Campaign.

Centering around the six topics of “Revolution Now and Innovation for the Future”, “The Transformation of Power Systems”, “Accelerating the Pace of Innovation”, “Electric Mobility and Transformation of Transport”, “Updates and Announcements on Mission Innovation Challenges” and “Transformation via Efficiency & Productivity” of the Summit, government representatives, entrepreneurs, experts and scholars and conference delegates from around the world engaged in discussions on how to establish public-private partnership and push forward clean energy revolution worldwide. During the Summit, representatives of all member countries and international organizations announced their progress in the challenge campaigns under the CEM and MI mechanisms and launched several new campaigns.

Minister Wan Gang pointed out that the theme of the CEM8 and MI2 was “Tackling challenges through innovation, working together for a clean energy transition”. Working together was a major highlight, pointing to the need to form a strong synergy for clean energy innovation and development. During the Summit, CEM and MI ministerial closed-door meetings were held. Five high-level roundtables were organized on the topic of accelerating innovation---public-private investment and boosting scientific explorations and early technology development to foster discussions on the actions, gaps and opportunities of clean energy development. CEM and MI members as the most active groups of innovation in the world must adopt innovative ideas, policies, technologies and business actions to put into practice the tenets of the two mechanisms, and push forward a global transition towards clean energy by sharing policies and best practices and putting forward initiatives and campaigns. Finally, Minister Wan Gang expressed the hope that the Summit could promote all countries to continue to work together, follow the ideas of innovative, coordinated, green, open and shared development, strengthen exchanges and cooperation and open a new chapter in clean energy actions.

At the Summit, Minister Wan Gang officially announced the launch of the EV30@30 Campaign on behalf of the Chinese government. The EV30@30 is a campaign under the CEM mechanism. Its objective is to set a new target for the deployment of electric vehicles worldwide, namely 30% of new vehicle sales by 2030 will be electric vehicles. As the joint leaders of the campaign, China and the International Energy Agency will bring together all participating members to actively study policies for EV deployment, contribute technology R&D funds, strengthen knowledge sharing and exchanges, expand the deployment of charging facilities and other infrastructure and push forward the Global Electric Vehicle Pilot Cities Project. Currently, the EV30@30 Campaign has attracted the active participation of Canada, Finland, Japan, the Netherlands and other CEM-EVI member countries. China will work with these member countries, UNEP, EV100 and other organizations, and bring together public and private sectors, so as to achieve the goals of the EV30@30 Campaign.
