The Yunnan—Guangdong ±800 Kilovolt HVDC Project of China Southern Power Grid (CSPG), designed and built by China, was launched into operation on December 28. The Project was featured by the highest voltage of its kind in the world.

The Project received considerable support from Extra-high Voltage Transmission and Converting System Development Project of the State Eleventh Five-Year Plan, undertaken by CSPG and others.

The Project was initiated in the December of 2006 and covered a total length of 1,373 kilometers, stretching from Chuxiong Prefecture of Yunnan to Guangzhou city of Guangdong.
