The State Agricultural and Husbandry Research Institute of Costa Rica promoted Chinese hybrid rice on April 29, 2010 in its northern test bed.

Dr. Bernardo Mora, head of the research institute, announced that NP833, a breed of hybrid rice presented by the Chinese side, had been successfully planted in Costa Rica. Sampling indicated that yield per hectare was estimated to surpass 8,000 kilograms, twice the yield of local rice.

NP833 is characterized by high yield, disease resistance and wide applicability. The cooperation in agriculture is a demo project under the framework of Sino-Costa Rica Science and Technology Cooperation initiated in 2008.
