At the invitation of the Australian government and New Zealand government, Minister Wan Gang of Science and Technology made an official visit to the two countries from March 20 to 29, 2011.

During his visit to Australia, Minister Wan Gang met with Kim Carr, Australian Federal Minister for Innovation, Industry and Research, Martin Ferguson, Minister for Resources and Energy, Kristina Keneally, then Premier of New South Wales (NSW), and other senior officials. Together, Minister Wan and Premier Keneally witnessed the renewal of the MOU between MOST and the NSW Government. Minister Wan also signed, with Premier Anna Bligh of Queensland, the renewed MOU on Science and Technology Cooperation between MOST and the government of Queensland.

During his talks with Minister Carr, Minister Wan acknowledged the great achievements made in science and technology cooperation between China and Australia, and expressed the hope that both sides would continue the support to developing joint research centers and promote the cooperation among enterprises, universities and research institutions in emerging industries including new energy vehicles, energy conservation and environmental protection.

During his visit to New Zealand, Minister Wan met with Wayne Mapp, Minister of Research and Innovation and Nick Smith, Minister of the Environment. Minister Wan attended a round-table with science and technology leaders and visited University of Auckland, where he met with local Chinese scholars and students.

During his talks with Minister Mapp, Minister Wan acknowledged the achievements made in China-New Zealand science and technology cooperation. The two sides agreed to work together for the long-term cooperation in life sciences, food safety, water pollution management and other priority areas.
