Minister Wan Gang met at the China National Convention Center in Beijing with a delegation led by Maroš Šefčovič, Vice President of the European Commission on the sidelines of the 8th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) and the 2nd Mission Innovation (MI) Ministerial. The two sides exchanged views on the following-up of the Paris Agreement, clean energy, energy security, climate change and other topics.
Minister Wan introduced the 19th China-EU Summit and the 3rd China-EU Innovation Cooperation Dialogue held in Brussels on June 2 and their outcomes, noting that innovation cooperation is agreed upon by China and the European Union, developing clean energy is an important way of addressing climate change and innovation provides important support for clean energy. The Chinese government implements an innovation-driven development strategy and has formulated a series of policies to continuously optimize the structure of public R&D inputs and develop a favorable climate for innovation and entrepreneurship. China and the EU have established a co-funding mechanism which is pragmatic and efficient and has already sponsored the joint efforts between researchers and institutions of both sides.
Vice President Šefčovič introduced EU’s energy policy and development, noting that guaranteeing energy security and addressing climate change are priorities. The EU is committed to eliminating barriers in the energy market among its members, advancing relevant legislative efforts and implementing the Paris Agreement. He expressed the hope that the EU could continue to cooperate with China to jointly develop clean energy, reduce pollution, improve the environment and enable sustainable development.
The two sides recognized the need to continue the CEM and MI mechanisms, explore possibilities for building collaborative platforms for clean energy, pool innovation resources of both sides, strengthen collaboration in renewable energy, efficient utilization of traditional energy and energy efficiency, and further innovation collaboration.
Also present at the meeting was Ye Dongbai, Director General of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
