The Second Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-2) was successfully held on June 7-8, 2017 at the China National Convention Center in Beijing. Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to the Eighth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM8) held together with MI-2. Vice Premier of China Zhang Gaoli addressed the opening ceremony. MI-2 was attended by delegations from 23 members, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, the United States as well as the European Commission. Minister Wan Gang was named Chair of the meeting, and Maroš Šefčovič, European Commission’s Vice President of the Energy Union, was Co-chair.
The Chair’s Summary was released at the meeting. In the summary, MI-2 Chair stressed that members have played important roles in accelerating the pace of innovation and popularizing affordable clean energy around the world, with an emphasis on MI’s role in gathering global public sponsors of clean energy research, attracting and encouraging private-sector partners to join the research. The Chair’s Summary also introduced members’ programs on R&D priorities, investment plans as well as their latest national baselines.
The Summary made a brief account of some chapters of the MI Action Plan, including encouraging public departments to support clean energy research and innovation, pushing private institutions to participate and invest in the key energy “Innovation Challenges”, expediting international cooperation to accelerate innovation and providing related information to encourage MI members and players in the clean energy industry to get involved. The Action Plan is launched on a voluntary basis where members can choose to engage in one or several programs meeting their technology expectations and policy interests.
At the meeting, the European Commission and Sweden, on behalf of the Nordic Council of Ministers, announced that they would co-host the MI-3 in 2018. Canada announced that it would host the MI-4 in 2019.
