On September 5, 2017, the fourth session of the Sub-committee on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) of China-Brazil High Level Coordination and Cooperation Commission was held in Brasilia. Chinese Vice Minister of Science and Technology Xu Nanping and Brazilian Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs José de Carvalho and Vice Minister of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications Alvaro Prata co-chaired the meeting. Charge d‘Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Brazil Song Yang attended and addressed the meeting. Representatives from the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology(MOST), the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Tsinghua University and the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Agricultural Research Corporation and other departments attended the meeting.
Vice Minister Xu Nanping said that China has made a series of breakthroughs in the field of STI in recent years. China attaches great importance to international cooperation on STI and is willing to expand bilateral science and technology(S&T) cooperation with Brazil. He pointed out that China and Brazil have carried out pragmatic and efficient cooperation in recent years under intergovernmental mechanisms such as the STI Sub-committee of the High Level Coordination and Cooperation Commission and the High-level Dialogue on STI. S&T cooperation between the two sides enjoys strong complementarity and broad prospects. Building platforms and mechanisms is an important starting point for advancing S&T cooperation. It is hoped that the two sides will work together to promote all-dimensional and multi-faceted industry-university-research cooperation through such forms as science park cooperation and joint laboratories to support the socio-economic development in both countries.
Vice Minister José de Carvalho applauded the frequent high-level visits and ever growing political mutual trust between China and Brazil, and commended S&T cooperation as one of the important pillars of bilateral relations. He hoped that cooperation between the two sides will add new splendor to the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Brazil. Vice Minister Alvaro Prata spoke highly of China’s achievements in STI, and said Brazil is willing to enhance mutually beneficial cooperation with China in such areas as S&T park cooperation, joint laboratories and think tank exchanges to contribute to the scientific and technological progress in both countries.
After the meeting, the co-chairs witnessed the signing of cooperation agreements between the relevant agencies of the two sides.
