On June 29, 2023, the Seminar on the Development of the Lancang-Mekong Innovation Corridor was successfully held in Kunming. Representatives from government, research institutions, and higher education institutions of China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam engaged in in-depth discussions on strengthening science, technology and innovation cooperation in the Lancang-Mekong region and developing the innovation corridor. Dai Gang, Director-General of the Department of International Cooperation of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, attended the seminar.
Dai Gang pointed out that strengthening science, technology and innovation cooperation in the Lancang-Mekong region is an important consensus reached during the Third Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Leaders‘Meeting. The Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology attaches great importance to the role of science, technology and innovation in the process of building a Lancang-Mekong community. China is willing to explore the development of the Lancang-Mekong Innovation Corridor with relevant countries, expand and deepen the Lancang-Mekong cooperation mechanism, and inject more vitality into the development and prosperity of the region.
Representatives from related countries held in-depth discussions in areas of mutual concern, such as people-to-people exchanges, the establishment of research platforms, poverty reduction, innovation and entrepreneurship, and the development of green technologies. The Torch High Technology Industry Development Center and the Rural Technology Development Center of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology presented the Special Cooperation Programs on Innovation and Entrepreneurship for the Belt and Road Initiative and Science and Technology for Poverty Reduction. During the meeting, discussions were held and consensus was reached among participating countries on the cooperation ideas, collaborative models, and policy measures for the development of the Lancang-Mekong Innovation Corridor. In the future, related countries will further identify the priorities, pathways, and mechanisms for science, technology and innovation cooperation in the Lancang-Mekong region, with an aim to promote inclusive, sustainable, and high-quality regional development through the Lancang-Mekong Innovation Corridor.
